Wanting her children to feel good about their skin color and the curliness of their hair, Juanita Henderson of Fort Wayne, IN bathed them in positive affirmations. When she heard her daughters complain about wearing their hair in its natural state, she decided to do something to further help boost their self-esteem. That something grew into the Chocolate Kinks & Kurls (CKK) brand.
Henderson, a self-proclaimed Kurl Koach, developed a product she hoped would address the specific hair and skin care needs of African Americans. What began in 2012 on an aisle in a local Fort Wayne drug store became Kurl Talks and one-on-one Kurl sessions, before growing to a full-on hair care line.
Now offering about a dozen different products, the primary CKK focus continues to be natural hair; with one product for the body, Her Bar. CKK, considering the different types of hair care needs, helps buyers by bundling products for that specific need. CKK can be purchased at Henderson’s shop in Fort Wayne and from the Web site. You may want to contact them to learn of any other shops that may also carry their inventions.
With names that sound more like something on a dessert or drink menu, CKK develops creations that appeal to the eye and nose. One reviewer on the CKK Instagram page said she smells and feels like hot chocolate when using CKK’s Cocoa Crème Clay Wash. In addition to smelling delicious, the Cocoa Crème Clay Wash also boasts that it cleans, detangles, and conditions.
Thankfully, the CKK Web site is easy to navigate, with prices listed that are competitive to other brands. Clicking on individual creations allows browsers to see the ingredient list for most of the products. Also several products speak of their ability to regulate the pH levels in the hair and skin.
Although the brand continues to grow, Henderson still offers a personal touch by making herself available to answer questions via her online Web account. She also continues to travel to give Kurl Koaching sessions to those transitioning from chemically-relaxed to natural styles. In addition to creating a great product, CKK also seeks to educate its buyers about the various needs of different hair types.
