Keeping The Pests Away With Pure Aroma Essential Oils

Now that I’ve clocked over 4,000 hours in Texas, I’ve had my fair share of run-ins with creepy crawlies and flying pests. I’m unsure if everything is bigger in Texas, but I’m convinced the bugs are. Since moving here from Las Vegas in January, I’ve had the immense pleasure of meeting flying roaches, mosquitos, spiders, earwigs, biscuit beetles, and rats. I’m so excited to welcome them into my new normal. So very excited. 

Terminix already knows my name and address by heart, so I no longer have anything disturbing my peace in the kitchen or bathrooms. Unfortunately, however, the construction of my apartment isn’t the best, so spiders, beetles, and earwigs continue to invite themselves in through the front and back doors, windows, and baseboards. I strongly considered packing things up and heading West until I saw success using lavender essential oil as a natural pest control.

Scents Pests Hate

• Fleas: Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint
• Spiders: Spearmint, Peppermint
• Mosquitoes: Peppermint, Citronella, Lemongrass, Tea Tree
• Flies: Rosemary, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Basil
• Ants: Spearmint, Peppermint, Lemon
• Rats: Clover, Garlic, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Citronella 

According to the Interwebs, pests strongly dislike the scent of peppermint, lemongrass, eucalyptus, cedarwood, lavender, and tea tree. I noticed a drastic decline in the number of times I had to swat at mosquitos or sweep beetles and earwigs outside since I started diffusing lavender essential oil and spraying lavender hydrosol along the baseboards and entry points. I wanted to add peppermint to my arsenal to see if I could increase my results, so I went shopping online for reinforcement.

I was happy to see Amazon had a highly rated (and deeply discounted) essential oil set with Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemongrass, Orange, Peppermint, and Tea Tree essential oils. The brand is Pure Aroma.

The oils are 100% pure therapeutic grade, with no fillers, additives, or carriers. As with most legit oil brands, the essential oils come in amber brown bottles to protect against light degradation and keep them fresh. It’s important to note that these oils are therapeutic grade and not food grade, so please do not ingest these (or most) essential oils. I intend to use these oils in my diffuser and possibly in DIY spray bottle concoctions. Fingers crossed, y’all!
