Candace Aliké Smith — A Writer's Self Care Journal

“I’m going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life.”

Elsie de Wolfe

Hey there. I’m Candace.

Welcome to my little corner of the web. I’m a marketing writer, matcha enthusiast, and mom of one living and learning in the ‘burbs of Dallas. I founded this site in 2015 to help women of color find non-toxic health and beauty products. Since then, the content has expanded to include herbs and oils, journaling, local sips, and travel. My mom Cherise pops in monthly to offer valuable mental health and mindfulness content as well.

I recently traded the dizzying pace of social media for unhurried moments to reflect in this space. Email me at hello@candacealikesmith.com if you’d like to talk about tea or matters of the heart.

Be well.

“One day to collect the scattered fragments of myself, and give them symmetry, and wholeness, and use.”

— Muriel Strode (1875–1964), My Little Book of Life, 1912

The Tree Is Up! And She Is Everything

For the first time in 6 years, I decorated a Christmas tree. I suppose the ice on my heart has finally melted. After years of allowing myself to get talked out of things that make me happy, I’ve returned to the Christmas tree tradition. I last hung decorations in San Diego for Christmas in 2016, […] Read more

What Happens To A Dream Deferred? A YouTube video on Delayed Life Syndrome appeared in my recommended feed the other day. When I first saw the title —I’m finally beginning to LIVE— a flood of deferred dreams rushed through my thoughts. I remembered all the outfits I told myself I’d wear after losing weight and […] Read more

Mapping The Unknown With My Kate Spade New York 2023 Planner

With 39 nights of sleep until January, I wanted to get a head start on mapping 2023. That task seems a bit laughable considering how unpredictable and mindboggling 2022 turned out to be, but nevertheless, she persisted. Shopping for a planner in late November forced my decision between buying an 18-month planner that began in […] Read more

It’s time to blow up the illusion.

Stories of transformation have always been deeply fascinating to me.  The rising phoenix. Butterflies. Even shows like Intervention, The Biggest Loser, Starting Over, and Hoarders. Witnessing complete chaos and destruction transform into order and restoration moves me in a way nothing else can.  I suppose that’s why blowing up my life has never intimidated me.  […] Read more

How To Swim In Mud: Keep Your Head Up

During a morning of Scripture reading, I (Cherise) came across some passages where Job is comparing his former “glory days” to currently feeling like an outcast. Job’s words resonated with me. I understood what it’s like going from feeling respected and valued to feeling left out and miss-handled. In Job 30:19, Job speaks of feeling […] Read more

Playing While I’m Waiting in Frisco, Texas

Happy Tuesday, lovelies! One of the many things I’m grateful for is unlimited PTO.  I felt myself spiraling last week, so I took a few days off to re-center. The days were beginning to blur together, and it felt like I was on the outside of myself, watching my mind and body get tossed here […] Read more
