Candace Aliké Smith — A Writer's Self Care Journal

“I’m going to make everything around me beautiful. That will be my life.”

Elsie de Wolfe

Hey there. I’m Candace.

Welcome to my little corner of the web. I’m a marketing writer, matcha enthusiast, and mom of one living and learning in the ‘burbs of Dallas. I founded this site in 2015 to help women of color find non-toxic health and beauty products. Since then, the content has expanded to include herbs and oils, journaling, local sips, and travel. My mom Cherise pops in monthly to offer valuable mental health and mindfulness content as well.

I recently traded the dizzying pace of social media for unhurried moments to reflect in this space. Email me at hello@candacealikesmith.com if you’d like to talk about tea or matters of the heart.

Be well.

“One day to collect the scattered fragments of myself, and give them symmetry, and wholeness, and use.”

— Muriel Strode (1875–1964), My Little Book of Life, 1912

    Suicide Is Preventable

In 2010, just two years after September was deemed National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I (Cherise) led my first suicide prevention training. Based on the discussion during that training, it was apparent that viewing suicide as preventable was a rather new concept. In fact, saying “suicide is a preventable public health matter,” made no sense […] Read more

7 Reasons I Smiled Over The Weekend

Happy Monday! One of my goals for 2022 is to finally do something with the 20K+ pictures and videos I’ve taken of my travels, my finds, and my kid. Yes, I really do have 20,000 pictures and videos saved on my Flickr, awaiting their forever homes. Unfortunately for me, it doesn’t take much for a […] Read more

Grief & Loss: Sometimes It Just Hits Different

Around this time in 2020, I, Cherise, wrote of feeling weary. Having dealt with six months of a global pandemic that entailed isolation, collective loss, and traumatic images playing across multiple media outlets… I was tired… weary. Well, 2022 has been another heavy year. This time the yuck hit closer to home. Since late February, […] Read more

13 Ways Dallas Humidity Changed My Skincare & Beauty Routines

I left Las Vegas and moved to the Dallas area in mid-January, days before the city decided to freeze and revolt. Roads were unusable. Businesses closed. The snow went from pretty to pretty inconvenient overnight. In all the ways a person could not be ready, I was not ready for Texas weather. Not only was […] Read more

Going Green With Pelindaba Lavender Dallas

Since leaving Instagram, I’ve relied on my mom to keep me up on all the fun things in my city. When she told me about a store at Galleria Dallas selling all things lavender, I knew I had to check it out.  Pelindaba Lavender is an all-things lavender franchise store and product gallery that opened […] Read more

Blooming Beautifully at The Plant Project Dallas

Dwelling on both sides of a duplex in the heart of Dallas’ Uptown district is a beautiful space called The Plant Project. Touted as the first black-owned plant store in Dallas, The Plant Project was conceptualized and set on its way within seven days by Houston native, owner, and founder Bree Iman Clarke. While one […] Read more
